    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

New International Version (NIV): If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

English Standard Version (ESV): But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

    Introduction

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus frequently addresses the importance of humility, innocence, and the protection of those who are vulnerable in faith. Matthew 18:6 serves as a solemn warning about the grave responsibility we hold in nurturing and safeguarding the faith of the ‘little ones’—those who are new to faith or spiritually immature. This verse challenges us to reflect on the influence we have on others, especially those who look up to us for spiritual guidance.

    Historical Context

The Gospel of Matthew was written by the apostle Matthew, a former tax collector who became one of Jesus’ twelve disciples. This Gospel was likely penned around 70-80 AD for a Jewish Christian audience. The context of Matthew 18:6 is part of a broader teaching on humility and greatness in the kingdom of heaven. Jesus used a child to illustrate the type of faith and humility that his followers should possess, warning against leading these ‘little ones’ astray.

    Key Word Analysis

Offend: The Greek word ‘skandalizo’ means to cause to stumble or sin. It highlights the severity of leading someone away from faith.
Little ones: Refers not only to children but also to those who are young or new in their faith.
Millstone: A large stone used for grinding grain. Its use here signifies the weight of the consequences.
Depth: The deep or abyss, symbolizing a place of no return or serious consequence.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse underscores the profound responsibility each believer has in nurturing the faith of others. It highlights how precious and delicate faith is, especially among those who are new or vulnerable in their journey. Jesus’ warning reveals God’s deep concern for the spiritual well-being of all His children and the severe consequences of leading others astray.

    Life Application

In our daily lives, we should strive to be positive influences on those around us, especially new believers or those struggling in their faith. This means living authentically, being mindful of our actions, and providing encouragement rather than causing doubt or stumbling blocks. We are called to be mentors, guides, and protectors of the faith of others.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

My child, know that every soul is precious to me. Guard the hearts of those who are tender in faith and seek to uplift, not discourage. Your actions carry the power to guide others closer to me or to turn them away. Walk in love and humility, and let your life be a beacon of my grace.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, I ask for your guidance and wisdom in my interactions with others. Help me to be a source of encouragement and faith, never leading others astray. May my life reflect your love and truth, guiding the hearts of those who seek you. Amen.
