    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?

New International Version (NIV): Ask all the people of the land and the priests, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months for the past seventy years, was it really for me that you fasted?’

English Standard Version (ESV): Say to all the people of the land and the priests, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth month and in the seventh, for these seventy years, was it for me that you fasted?’

    Introduction

Fasting is a spiritual discipline that many undertake, but its true purpose is often lost. In Zechariah 7:5, we find God questioning His people through the prophet about the sincerity of their fasts. Are their rituals truly for Him, or have they become mere ceremonies? This verse invites us to examine our intentions and the authenticity of our devotion.

    Historical Context

Zechariah, a prophet during the post-exilic period, conveyed God’s messages to the Israelites who had returned from Babylonian captivity. This verse specifically addresses the people’s practices during the seventy years of exile, challenging them to reflect on whether their fasting was truly directed toward God or merely a traditional duty.

    Key Word Analysis

Fasted: The Hebrew word used here, tsom, implies abstaining from food as an act of religious devotion. Mourned: Reflects deep sorrow or grief, often associated with repentance. Fifth and seventh month: Specific periods of fasting observed by the Jewish people, commemorating national tragedies. Seventy years: Refers to the duration of the Babylonian exile, a significant time of reflection for the Israelites.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse reveals God’s desire for genuine devotion rather than empty rituals. It underscores that religious practices like fasting should be motivated by a heartfelt commitment to God. True worship involves sincerity and introspection, seeking alignment with God’s will rather than merely fulfilling obligations.

    Life Application

Modern readers are encouraged to reflect on their spiritual disciplines, whether fasting, prayer, or other practices. Are these acts done with a heart seeking God, or out of habit? This verse challenges us to ensure our spiritual activities are authentic expressions of our devotion to God.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

My beloved, do not let your practices become mere routines. Seek Me with a sincere heart, for it is not the action itself but the love and devotion behind it that I desire. Let your fasts and prayers be an expression of your deep yearning to walk with Me. Embrace authenticity in your worship, and you will find peace and fulfillment.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, help us to examine our hearts and intentions in our spiritual practices. May we seek You with sincerity and love, avoiding empty rituals. Guide us to true devotion and deeper intimacy with You. Amen.
