    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.

New International Version (NIV): Because the LORD had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.

English Standard Version (ESV): And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb.

    Introduction

There’s a certain agony that comes from unmet desires, especially those that pierce deep into the heart’s longing. In 1 Samuel 1:6, we find Hannah embroiled in such a struggle. Her story offers relatable emotions to anyone who has faced challenges or felt the sting of another’s taunts. As we delve into this verse, we uncover the weight of Hannah’s burden and the greater purpose God had in her waiting.

    Historical Context

1 Samuel was authored by the prophet Samuel, Nathan, and Gad, documenting a pivotal transition in Israel’s history around 1100 B.C. In this time, Elkanah, Hannah’s husband, had two wives – Hannah and Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah did not. This narrative unfolds in a period when childbearing was seen as a primary purpose for women, intensifying Hannah’s distress.

    Key Word Analysis

Adversary: In Hebrew, ‘tsarah’ signifies an opponent or rival, highlighting the antagonistic relationship between Peninnah and Hannah.
Provoked: The Hebrew word ‘kaas’ suggests deliberate irritation, underscoring Peninnah’s intent to distress Hannah.
Shut up: ‘Sagar’ in Hebrew indicates closure or withholding, emphasizing God’s sovereign decision in Hannah’s barrenness.

    Spiritual Insight

This verse unveils a profound truth about God’s sovereignty and timing. Even when Hannah felt despair, God was orchestrating a larger narrative for His glory and her good. Her eventual son, Samuel, would become a key figure in Israel’s history, demonstrating that God’s delays are not His denials.

    Life Application

In moments of provocation and unmet desires, we are invited to trust God’s greater plan. Like Hannah, we should bring our burdens to God in prayer, believing that He hears us and has a purpose beyond our current understanding.

What Jesus Might Say About This Verse

My child, when your heart is heavy with unfulfilled desires, know that I see your tears and hear your cries. Trust in Me, for My plans are for your welfare and not for harm. Hold onto faith, even when the wait seems unbearable. I am with you always, guiding you towards hope and purpose.

    Prayer Prompt

Heavenly Father, in moments of deep longing and provocation, help me to rest in Your timing and faithfulness. Grant me patience and unwavering trust in Your plan. Amen.
