    The Verse

King James Version (KJV): And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour.

New International Version (NIV): You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

English Standard Version (ESV): You may bequeath them to your sons after you to inherit as a possession forever. You may make slaves of them, but over your brothers the people of Israel you shall not rule, one over another ruthlessly.

Bondmen: The term ‘ebed’ denotes servitude, indicating a long-term, hereditary service role. Ruthless: The word ‘perek’ implies harshness or severity, a behavior explicitly forbidden in dealings with fellow Israelites.
